D’Angelo’s Voodoo: a rhythm designed to sit behind the beat

D’Angelo and Questlove spent four years refining what other producers rushed to correct: a pulse that lands almost imperceptibly late.

Electric Lady, the New York studio Jimi Hendrix built in the late 1960s, became a second home for D’Angelo three decades later. Among its tape machines, he and Questlove spent four years making “Voodoo”. The album arrived in January 2000.

The central idea initially sounds like an error. Questlove places selected drum hits just behind the pulse, a fraction later than the ear expects — not enough to break the rhythm, but enough to make it sway.

At a time when pop producers were quantising beats to a millisecond grid, “Voodoo” chose the movement of a human hand.

The sessions drew the musicians later known as the Soulquarians, who were working on several records in the same rooms. Visitors often ended up at a microphone. Some “Voodoo” parts began with people who had only come to listen.

A quarter-century later, that tiny delay has become a language for a generation of drummers and producers. The lesson is not about drum technique. It is that precision and life are not the same thing.

Sometimes music begins to breathe only when the grid stays slightly ahead of the hand.

Notes
  1. Playing behind the beat means placing notes fractionally late against the metrical grid while keeping the shared tempo intact.
